Rubber seals are widely used across automotive, machinery, and electronics industries as essential components for sealing and shock absorption. When selecting grease for rubber seal lubrication, several important questions must be addressed:
1. How Do Rubber and Grease Interact?
Rubber and grease interaction can be divided into chemical and physical effects. Physical effects mainly involve absorption between grease and rubber, manifesting as swelling or shrinkage. Chemical effects involve reactions between substances in the grease and rubber, fundamentally changing both materials’ physical properties, leading to seal and lubrication failure.
2. Rubber Seal Dynamic vs. Static Sealing
Dynamic sealing: Maximum allowable rubber swelling is 15%–25%. Beyond this range, component operation will definitely be obstructed. For shrinkage, even 3%–4% can cause seal failure — ideally kept below 1%.
Static sealing: Allowable swelling range is more lenient, generally not exceeding 50% (varies by structure, material, and working medium). Shrinkage, like dynamic sealing, must be strictly controlled.
Since base oil content in grease ranges from 70%–98%, base oil is the most significant factor in rubber-grease compatibility.
Base Oil Compatibility with Common Rubber Materials
Dynamic Sealing: Max swelling 15-25%. Shrinkage at 3-4% causes failure; should be limited to <1%.
Static Sealing: Swelling allowed up to 50%. Shrinkage must be strictly controlled as in dynamic sealing.
