Electrical contacts are key components in various switches, connectors, relays, jack plugs, circuit breakers, reversers, and commutators. Adding appropriate lubricant effectively improves lubrication of switch friction surfaces, suppresses wear, reduces arcing, lowers temperature rise, prevents oxidation, improves handling and tactile feel, and extends service life.

Under a microscope, switch surfaces are quite rough, despite appearing smooth to the naked eye. Under different contact forces, the effective contact area is only 0.01% to 1% of the apparent surface area — this small area determines contact resistance.

Oxide or plastic decomposition layers on contact surfaces increase contact resistance. When oxide layers break under sufficient contact pressure or heat, the generated heat exacerbates micro-fretting corrosion, further increasing contact resistance. Without lubricant, actual effective contact area continuously decreases during repeated switching operations, directly manifested as increasing contact resistance affecting switch performance.
